Here is another great post by Ryan Healy on working towards your goals.
I started a comment discussion with the following:
“Should we start a discussion as to whether or not ANY ladder leads to happiness? My spiritual studies lead me to believe that happiness does not reside in any approach or goal or path. There is a connection between the two, but I do not feel that happiness depends on which ladder or ladders you choose to climb.”
My feeling on this is not that any ladder can lead to happiness, but that the wrong ladder can certainly lead to unhappiness. What it comes down to is what do we want to pursue in this life. Are we pursuing money because we feel that if we had enough money and could buy the things we want then we’ll finally be happy? I can tell you this, if you are not happy before you have the money, you sure are not going to be happy after you have the money.
The Eight-fold Path of Buddhism includes Right Livelihood. If your work in some way harms other people, you will not find peace and happiness in your life. You can pretend to be peaceful and happy all you want, but if you are in the business of hurting people, you will not experience either one.
